Energy Savings
Replacement windows save you energy and will eventually pay for themselves. How fast your new windows will pay for themselves depends on many factors.
FACTORS AFFECTING PAYBACK
- How bad are your existing windows?
- Are they aluminum?
- Steel?
- Are they drafty?
Do you have storm windows?
Do you heat with oil or natural gas?
Do you set your thermostat lower at night in the winter?
In winter what is your temperature setting during the day?
We have homeowners who keep the house at 60 degrees and we have seen homeowners who keep the house at 74 degrees. The homeowner who maintains a higher setting in the winter will see greater savings.
In summer what is your temperature setting?
Some people set the thermostat at 74 degrees and others set it at 65 degrees. The homeowner who keeps his setting lower in the summer will see greater savings.
How high will heating oil and natural gas go?
Assuming you use natural gas, let’s look at historical pricing.
YEARS PRICE INCREASE
1930-1999 5.5% on average annual increase
2000-2005 15% on average annual increase
Natural gas prices have stabilized and have actually gone down from the peak prices we experienced in 2006. However, with the world economy growing quickly we see continued pressure on natural gas prices. China is expected to double its consumption of natural gas in the next three years. Natural gas today produces much more of our electricity in the U.S. because it burns cleaner than coal. Coal plants are being shut down in favor of natural gas. Good for the environment but tough on our wallets.
BOTTOM LINE
We occasionally have customers with really bad drafty single pane wood windows, aluminum windows or steel windows and they tell us that they have seen a 50% reduction in fuel consumption. The point we would like to make here is that they are the exception not the standard.
For us to give you an estimate on fuel savings is nearly impossible, it is simply dependent on too many variables. On average we see most homeowners saving between 20 and 30 percent. The main thing is energy costs are going up so the sooner you start to save the sooner the windows pay for themselves
